JEE Main is run by NTA through the same application infrastructure as several of its other examinations, so the upload behaviour is familiar if you have applied to one of them. The application asks for a photograph and a signature, with category and PwD certificates required where applicable. Unlike NEET there is generally no postcard photograph, which is the single most common point of confusion between the two NTA exams.
Signature rejections outnumber size problems
The signature is where JEE applications most often fail validation, and almost never because of file size. It must be signed in running handwriting on plain white paper, not printed in block capitals, and not typed. It should be your normal signature, since it is compared against the one you produce in the examination hall and at admission. Sign several times on one sheet, photograph the sheet once in daylight, then crop the best attempt. Cropping to just the ink and converting to greyscale reduces the file far more than compression will, and costs no clarity at all.
Two attempts, one set of files
JEE Main runs in multiple sessions, and candidates commonly apply to more than one. Preparing your photograph and signature properly once means you can reuse them across sessions rather than redoing the work under deadline pressure. Keep the originals at full resolution in a folder you will find again, along with a note of the dimensions each portal asked for. Candidates who improvise the files minutes before a deadline are the ones who end up with a rejected application and no time to fix it.

- Does JEE Main need a postcard-size photo?
- Generally no — that is a NEET requirement. JEE Main typically asks for a passport-style photograph and a signature. Confirm against the current information bulletin, since NTA's requirements can change between cycles.
- What are the file size limits for JEE Main uploads?
- They are stated on the upload page and in the information bulletin for that session. Read the figure on the form you are actually filling.
- Why was my JEE signature rejected?
- Usually because it was written in block capitals rather than running handwriting, or signed in a colour other than black or blue, or on paper that was not plain white. Size is rarely the cause.
- Can I use the same files for both JEE sessions?
- Usually yes, provided they still meet the stated requirements and the photograph is within the permitted recency window. Prepare them properly once.
- My category certificate scan is too large. What now?
- Scan at 200 DPI in greyscale rather than 300 DPI colour, crop to the page edges, and upload only the pages requested. Those three changes together usually do more than any compressor.
- Are my documents sent anywhere?
- No. Compression happens entirely in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
