Why some photos compress well and others fight back

JPEG compression works by discarding detail the eye is least likely to miss, so how well it performs depends entirely on how much detail your photo contains. A passport-style portrait against a plain wall compresses beautifully — the background is a flat expanse of near-identical pixels that costs almost nothing to store. A photo taken outdoors with foliage, texture, and varied lighting is the opposite: every part of the frame carries detail competing for the same limited budget, so the compressor has to sacrifice quality everywhere including on the face.

Resize before you compress

This is the step most people skip and it does more than compression alone. A modern phone photo is often 4000 pixels wide, while an upload form may display it at 200 pixels. Compressing at full resolution forces the encoder to preserve detail nobody will ever see, then destroys quality trying to hit your size target. Resizing to roughly the dimensions actually needed first means the compressor starts with far less data and can afford much higher quality per pixel. The result at the same file size is dramatically better.

When the source photo is the problem

If an image will not reach your target without visible damage, retaking or re-sourcing it usually beats compressing harder. Cropping a face out of a group photo leaves a busy background that eats the file budget. A photo taken under yellow indoor light carries colour noise across every flat area. Shooting against a plain light wall in indirect daylight, with the subject filling the frame, produces an image that lands under 50KB with quality to spare — the same target that ruins a poorly-sourced photo.
