Why numbered pages matter for submitted documents
Any document that will be reviewed by someone else benefits from page numbers, and for legal filings, tender submissions, and academic work they are often mandatory. The practical reason is simple: printed documents get dropped, re-stapled, and photocopied out of order, and without numbers there is no way to detect or fix that. Numbers also make a document referenceable — being able to say 'see page 14' is far more useful to a reader than 'somewhere in the annexures'.
The current-of-total format
Numbers are stamped bottom-centre as 'page of total', for example '3 / 20'. That format does more work than a bare number: it tells a reader immediately whether they are holding the complete document. A stack ending at '18 / 20' is visibly missing two pages, whereas a stack ending at '18' looks complete. For anything being submitted physically or as a scan, that redundancy is worth having.
Do this step last
Page numbers are drawn onto the page as permanent content, not stored as an editable field. That means any change to the document afterwards — merging in another file, deleting a page, reordering — leaves the printed numbers wrong while the actual sequence has moved on. Finish all your structural edits first, then number. If you do need to renumber later, you would need to work from the version before numbering rather than restamping over the existing numbers.

- You'll need to unlock a password-protected PDF first — this tool doesn't handle encrypted files.
- Can I start numbering from a page other than 1?
- Not currently — numbering always starts at 1 on the first page. For documents where a cover should not be counted, remove the cover, number the rest, then merge the cover back on.
- Will the numbers overlap my existing content?
- They are placed in the bottom margin, which is empty on most documents. If your pages already have content at the very bottom edge, check the result before submitting.
