What a watermark does and does not do
A diagonal watermark reading DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, or SAMPLE communicates status at a glance and discourages casual reuse of a document that was shared for review. What it does not do is provide security. The text is drawn onto the page like any other content, and someone determined to remove it can crop, cover, or rebuild the page. Treat it as a label, not a lock — if a document genuinely must not be redistributed, the control has to be who you send it to.
Why the watermark is semi-transparent
The watermark is drawn in grey at reduced opacity and rotated diagonally so it stays visible across the page without making the underlying text unreadable. That balance is deliberate: a watermark solid enough to obscure content defeats the purpose of sending the document, while one too faint to notice does not label anything. Diagonal placement also makes it harder to crop out than a corner mark, since it crosses the useful content area.
Keep an unwatermarked original
The watermark becomes part of the page content, so there is no way to remove it cleanly afterwards. Always work from a copy and keep your clean original, particularly for documents you will later need to submit formally. A contract that went out for review with DRAFT across every page cannot become the final signed version — you need the unmarked file for that.
