What a visible watermark achieves
A diagonal watermark across a photo deters casual reuse: it makes an image obviously unsuitable for someone else to pass off as their own, and it labels a file as a preview or sample. Photographers and designers use this for client proofs, where the point is to let someone judge the work without handing over a usable final file. It is a deterrent and a label, not protection — anyone determined can crop or clone it out.
Why it sits diagonally across the centre
Corner watermarks are trivially cropped away. Placing the text diagonally through the middle of the image means removing it would destroy the subject too, which is the whole point. The text is drawn semi-transparent in white with a dark outline so it stays legible over both light and dark areas of a photo — a plain white watermark disappears against a bright sky, and a plain dark one vanishes in shadows.
Keep the clean original
The watermark becomes part of the image and cannot be cleanly removed afterwards.
