Why convert PNG to WebP
This is usually the best conversion available for web graphics, because WebP keeps everything PNG offers — including full transparency — while compressing substantially better. Logos, icons, illustrations, and screenshots with alpha channels often drop by half or more with no visible difference, which makes it the natural upgrade for any PNG being served on a website.
What you gain and what you give up
You gain a much smaller file with transparency intact, which is the combination JPG cannot provide at all. You give up some compatibility with older software, and if you use lossy WebP you accept a small quality trade. For flat-colour graphics that trade is usually invisible; for images where absolute pixel fidelity matters, PNG remains the safer archive format.
When this is the wrong conversion
Keep the PNG if the file is a master copy you will re-edit, or if it needs to open reliably in older design software. WebP is a delivery format — excellent for what visitors download, less suited as the version you archive and keep working from.
